California student claims high school has banned her from wearing her MAGA hat

A high school student in central California is clashing with her school over its policy prohibiting her from wearing her "Make America Great Again" hat on campus, according to KCBS-TV.

Senior Maddie Mueller of Clovis North High School near Fresno, California, claims her First Amendment rights are being violated by the school's dress code.

"How does being a patriot in trying to show pride in your country, how is that inappropriate?" Mueller asked. "To my knowledge, Trump is not a logo, it's a last name. It's just our president. You can't really claim that our president is a logo, a sports team, it's not affiliating with any gang."

What does the school say?

Clovis Unified School District spokesperson Kelly Avants said the dress code is about safety, and creating an environment conducive to learning.

"Our dress code is really about allowing our kids to come to school, to feel safe at school, to feel supported at school and to be free of distractions so they can focus on learning," Avants said to KGPE-TV.

Avants also told Fox News that the dress code is not being represented properly in media accounts.

"It's unfortunate that our dress code is being misrepresented as specifically singling out a MAGA hat, as that is not what the policy says," Avants said. The district dress code allows for students to wear shirts or other clothing with a wide variety of sayings and/or political commentary. Unless causing an actual disruption on campus, MAGA apparel is acceptable, and this has been shared with the student."

So what's the issue?

The school district's statement indicates that Mueller's Trump-supporting attire was the source of some sort of school disruption, although there is no indication that it is any fault of Mueller's.

Mueller said she's also run afoul of the dress code when wearing pro-border wall shirts.

"I don't care if I offend anybody," Mueller said. "I'm just showing support for the president and what I believe."
