WikiLeaks source Chelsea Manning is going back to prison - here's why

Chelsea Manning is going back to prison after refusing to comply with a subpoena to testify about her involvement with WikiLeaks.

Manning, who was born Bradley Manning, stole and leaked a massive cache of military reports and State Department intelligence to WikiLeaks, which has been identified by U.S. intelligence agencies as a front for Russian government operations.

After a conviction for espionage in 2013, Manning was imprisoned but released in 2017 when former President Barack Obama shortened her sentence.

U.S. District Judge Anthony Trenga ordered Manning be sent back to prison on Thursday. She will be charged $500 a day after 30 days if she does not comply with the subpoena.

After 60 days, the fine will increase to $1,000.

"Attempting to coerce me with a grand jury subpoena is not going to work. I will not cooperate with this or any other grand jury," Manning said. "It doesn't matter what it is, I'm just not going to comply or cooperate.

"Facing jail again, potentially today, doesn't change my stance," she added.

She added that the prosecutors were asking her to violate her principles and she would not do that. She did not explain what those principles were during the media briefing.

Manning's lawyer also indicated that she would not be complying with the court's demands.

The Mueller report accused Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, of covering up for the Russians as the source of private documents from the Hillary Clinton campaign that they leaked before the 2016 election.
