Dem Rep. Clyburn told colleagues the coronavirus stimulus bill is ‘a tremendous opportunity to restructure things to fit our vision’

Partisan politics at its worst

Democrats on Capitol Hill have now twice-rejected an economic stimulus packaged aimed at aiding Americans and businesses hurt by the coronavirus shutdown measures, as Republicans claim that their colleagues on the other side are attempting to cram a wish list of unrelated demands into the bill.

Adding fuel to the fire, news began circulating last week that House Majority Whip Jim Clyburn (D-S.C.) had reportedly told colleagues that the bill provided "a tremendous opportunity to restructure things to fit our vision."

Clyburn's comments came during a conference call last Thursday featuring more than 200 Democrats, in which House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y) allegedly pushed for environmental measures and increased collective bargaining powers to be included in the stimulus package.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell thrashed Democrats for their partisan politics on the Senate floor Monday.

"Here are some of the items on the Democratic wish list, over which they choose to block this legislation last night," he said. "Tax credits for solar energy and wind energy. Provisions to force employers to give special new treatment to big labor. And listen to this: New emissions standards for the airlines. Are you kidding me? ... Democrats won't let us fund hospitals or save small businesses unless they get to dust off the Green New Deal."

Texas Republican Rep. Dan Crenshaw also slammed Democrats for playing games while Americans are suffering under economic distress.

"This will go down as one of the most cynical, disgusting, malevolent actions in history," he wrote on Twitter. "Millions are losing jobs while they play these games."

Clyburn also made headlines last Sunday when he told "Axios on HBO" that President Trump is a racist who has hired white supremacists to work for him in the White House, and warned that America "could very well go the way of Germany in the 1930s."
