Couple in Sweden jailed after their 'vegan' baby almost dies

Severely malnourishment

A couple in Sweden is facing jail time after their 18-month-old child almost died from malnutrition due to the "vegan" diet they were feeding her.

What's the story?

While it's being described as "vegan," the baby lived off a strict diet of breast milk, potatoes, and brown rice.

A statement from the court said:

According to their ideological belief that the daughter was a citizen of the world, her parents did not even report the birth to any authority, have her checked at a paediatric centre, or even weigh or measure her growth.

The Daily Mail reported that the judge "found some of the parents' views 'remarkable' — particularly those of the mother who believed people could survive without food and water with the correct conditioning."

The parents were also self-professed "nomads" and lived with other people. They had also refused to vaccinate their daughter.

In addition to facing three months in prison for gross negligence, the couple will also have to pay a $6,200 fine. The child's father was also sentenced for drunk driving and drug offenses. Prosecutors had been pushing for two to three years in prison.

Despite all of this, the couple will still be able to see the baby for eight weeks with supervision by social services.

Does this sound familiar?

In an unrelated case from earlier this month, a couple in Australia were arrested after their 20-month-old girl's diet of oats, rice milk, half a banana, peanut butter or jam toast, tofu, and potatoes led to severe malnutrition. In this case, the baby was wearing clothes for a 12-month-old and her foster mother commented that people were "shocked at how small she is."

The couple is scheduled to be sentenced next month. They could face a maximum of five years in jail.
