DOD schools push 'Marxist' indoctrination, woke 'social engineering,' teachers say

Two teachers with the Department of Defense Education Activity accused DOD schools of pushing "Marxist" indoctrination and woke "social engineering" on students, Fox News Digital reported.

The DODEA is a branch of the Pentagon and a federally-operated school system that manages education for service members' children. There are nearly 70,000 children enrolled at DOD schools, which serve pre-kindergarten through 12th-grade students.

The teachers, John Smith and Alexander Black, whose names were changed to protect their identities for fear of retaliation, told Fox News Digital that voicing alternative views about gender ideology and American history would have professional consequences at the DODEA.

They noted that many of their colleagues do not agree with the school system's curriculum but are afraid to speak out.

Smith, a military veteran, explained that he believes the "biggest problem" facing the military is the "culture called Wokeism."

"I call it a social Marxist direction," Black added.

According to the teachers, in recent years, the DODEA has changed through its hiring, classroom curriculum, and library book selection. As a result, the teachers stated that left-leaning politics have become overt in the school system.

"We are not at the Chinese indoctrination ... level kind of thing ... We want to address it now before it becomes a problem," Black noted.

Black explained that while former President Trump was in office, his school was decorated with political propaganda.

"There were things all over the hallways, Black Lives Matter, putting [up political] posters, things like that, dealing with LGBTQ+ kind of narratives, transgender narratives, all those kinds of things that in all honesty don't necessarily have a place around minor children, blatantly, with no backlash or repercussions," he stated.

Smith argued that the DODEA continues "to embrace things that have no business in our school." He pointed to "gender realignment" as an example of "social engineering" promoted in the DOD schools.

Smith claimed that the school system's curriculum and controversial library book selection are to blame for the increased number of students identifying as transgender.

"It's not why I became a teacher. If they wanted me to be a sexual realignment engineer, if they wanted me to start browbeating the kids about how our history [is] ... racist, they should have told me this when I was hired because I wouldn't have agreed to do it. Because it's not true," Smith stated.

"There are movements going on right now from headquarters all the way down that are allowing ideas that are anti-American to take root and that we need to begin looking at getting to the heart of those matters and why those ideas are being pushed," Smith added.

A DOD spokesperson told Fox News Digital, "The Department of Defense Education Activity is committed to educating, engaging, and empowering military-connected students to succeed in a dynamic world. Our focus remains on ensuring our students, their families, and employees have equitable access to opportunities and resources that support student achievement and readiness for college and careers."
