Gun-toting road-rage motorist shot dead after armed man warns him to stop approaching him and his wife; cops say it looks like self-defense

A gun-toting road-rage motorist was shot dead Sunday at a Nashville intersection after an armed man warned him to stop approaching him and his wife — and police said the shooting so far appears to be a case of self-defense.

What are the details?

Police said Alden R. Jones, 71, was driving aggressively through Hermitage and Old Hickory, speeding and cutting off other drivers.

When Jones came to a stop at the traffic light at State Route 45 and Rio Vista Drive, he exited his vehicle, approached the vehicle directly behind him, and began banging on the driver's side window with a gun, police said.

With that, a 36-year-old driver — in a vehicle behind the one that Jones approached — tried to verbally intervene, police said.

Jones, with gun in hand, then began approaching the 36-year-old driver's vehicle, police said.

The 36-year-old driver exited his vehicle and yelled at Jones to stop and not come any closer, warning that he also had a gun, police said.

But Jones continued to approach and came very close, when the 36-year-old driver fired at Jones, telling police he did so in defense of himself and his wife, who was a passenger in their vehicle.

What happened next?

Police said the 36-year-old driver remained at the shooting scene and that he and his wife have been fully cooperative with detectives.

Witnesses corroborated the events described, police added.

The investigation so far indicates the shooting was an act of self-defense, police said, adding that no charges have been filed.

Police added that the investigation is continuing.

How are folks reacting?

More than 200 comments about the shooting are underneath a WZTV-TV Facebook post about it, and a number of commenters backed up the man who fatally shot Jones:

  • "I see no wrong except for the dude banging on widows...get what you get," one commenter wrote. "Do better folks. I would have done the same. No hesitation."
  • "Road rage is getting ridiculously out of hand," another commenter said.
  • "Chalk up one for the good guys," another commenter concluded.
