House Democrat promises that Robert Mueller will be subpoenaed

Testimony would happen behind closed doors, House rep says

Rep. Jim Himes (D-Conn.) told MSNBC that Democrats on the House Intelligence Committee would subpoena special counsel Robert Mueller — but that this testimony would happen behind closed doors.

"Morning Joe" host Joe Scarborough asked: "Why don't you subpoena [Mueller]? This is absolutely ridiculous. He documented 10 examples of the president of the United States obstructing justice. He documented illegal, or at least very improper, contacts between people associated with Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin. And you guys can't get him on Capitol Hill to talk? And he's too high and mighty to get on Capitol Hill and talk?"

Scarborough added that he thought it was "absurd" that Mueller thought "he was above testifying."

Himes, who sits on the Financial Services Committee and the Select Committee on Intelligence, answered, "It's going to happen. He's going to get subpoenaed."

"Look, we have a profound interest inside the Intelligence Committee in hearing about something that we haven't heard nearly enough," Himes continued. "And, by the way, it's going to be behind closed doors, so it's not necessarily going to be newsworthy, but we must hear about the—"

Scarborough interrupted him by repeatedly crying out, "Why?"

"Because what we need to hear about in the Intelligence Committee is the counterintelligence investigation, so that's totally separate [from the obstruction of justice part of the report]," Himes said. He added that there would also be "virtue" in having Mueller read from his report in a public setting, since most people have not read the whole thing.
