Democrat House Judiciary Committee member: It is 'likely' Kavanaugh will be investigated for perjury
January 22, 2019
He's the second current member of that committee to suggest that
A Democratic member of the House Judiciary Committee told supporters that he believed there was "no question" that Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh committed perjury during his confirmation hearings. He also said it was "likely" that the House Judiciary Committee would investigate Kavanaugh.
What did Neguse say?
Speaking to a gathering of his constituents on Friday, Rep. Joe Neguse (D-Colo.) was asked if he thought that the House of Representatives would take a closer look at the testimony Kavanaugh had given during his confirmation hearing. Neguse replied:
So , I think that that's another thing that will come up before the Judiciary Committee. There's no question he committed perjury during the confirmation hearings and so forth. So, I think the Judiciary Committee is likely to take that up.
The video of Neguse's comments was first obtained by the America Rising PAC, a conservative opposition research group.
Kavanaugh faced a contentious confirmation process before being confirmed by a vote of 50 to 48 in October.
Democrats have accused Kavanaugh of lying about allegations of sexual assault from several different women. Kavanaugh has denied that he acted inappropriately toward any of these women, or that he intentionally misled Congress. Neguse did not specify which parts of Kavanaugh's testimony he believed to be provably false.
Neguse was first sworn in as a member of Congress this month after being elected in November.
What else?
In November, Jerrold Nadler (D-N.Y.), the chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, was overheard on a train talking about possibly impeaching Kavanaugh. In one of these calls, Nadler said that there was "a real indication that Kavanaugh committed perjury."
Nadler expressed concern that even if Kavanaugh was successfully impeached, Trump could appoint "someone just as bad."
