OB/Gyn Leah Torres claims that 'Abortion bans are racist, classist, misogynistic, inhumane, and deadly,' and that those who disagree need to educate themselves
October 03, 2022
'If you disagree, educate yourself until you understand. Just as you should if you disagree that the Earth is a sphere.'
Dr. Leah Torres who describes herself on Twitter as an "OB/Gyn providing evidence-based medicine" and a "Sex-positive, gender-affirming repro health specialist," has claimed that abortion prohibitions "are racist, classist, misogynistic, inhumane, and deadly" and that anyone who thinks otherwise needs to educate themselves.
"Abortion is health care. Abortion bans are racist, classist, misogynistic, inhumane, and deadly. If you disagree, educate yourself until you understand. Just as you should if you disagree that the Earth is a sphere," Torres tweeted.
Dr. Greg J. Marchand responded to Torres' tweet by commenting, "Again, breast surgery for cancer is health care. Elective breast lift surgery is not. Medically necessary abortion is health care. (When the mother's life is in danger.) Elective abortion (99+%) is not. Please educate yourself on this until you understand. #obgyntwitter."

"Science tells us that the world is spherical, and life begins at conception. You're abortion's version of a flat-earther here," Ian Haworth tweeted.
"Abortion is NOT healthcare. I was 15 when I got pregnant and never ever thought of killing my baby. 30 years later I still have zero regrets. Made it through with hard work and perseverance. Was it easy NO, do I regret my decisions NO!" someone else tweeted in response to Torres' post.
Torres has also declared that she is "voting to save the planet and the people who inhabit it, not for Republicans."
In 2018, Torres tweeted, but apparently later deleted, a post in which she had said, "You know fetuses can’t scream, right? I transect the cord 1st so there’s really no opportunity, if they're even far enough along to have a larynx." According to the Associated Press, Torres later indicated that she was talking about the umbilical cord.

In 2015, Torres responded to a questioner who asked her, "Can you tell me when a human embryo becomes a person?"
"After the umbilical cord is cut, physiologically speaking," Torres answered.
