Justice is coming for man caught on camera viciously beating grandma on NYC subway train

Bystanders filmed the attack instead of trying to help the victim

New York City Police have arrested a man they say is responsible for viciously beating a homeless woman on the NYC subway.

The seemingly unprovoked attack was caught on camera, and sparked outrage nationwide because witnesses were seen filming the attack rather than intervening and trying to help the 78-year-old victim.

What are the details?

The suspect, 36-year-old Marc Gomez of Yonkers, was arrested in Lower Manhattan Saturday morning. According to the New York Times, NYPD received an anonymous tip identifying him as the assailant.

Police charged Gomez with felony assault. He was ordered held in jail in lieu of $30,000 bail, the New York Post reported.

Gomez's court-appointed lawyer argued at his arraignment in Bronx Criminal Court that Gomez acted in self-defense after the woman brandished a knife.

"She was homeless and lying across the seat and wanted all other passengers to move. She said, at that point, 'I have a knife and I'm going to stab you,'" the lawyer, Steven Mechanic, said, according to the Post.

What's the background?

The assault occurred in the early morning hours on March 10. The New York Times explains:

The video showed a tall man wearing jeans, glasses, a leather jacket and a knit cap forcefully kicking the woman at least six times as she sat on a northbound No. 2 train that was pulling into the Nereid Avenue station. Bystanders recorded the encounter and shouted but did not intervene. It was not clear what preceded the attack.

As the man made his way off the train, he turned to the passengers recording and said, "WorldStar that" — a reference to a popular website that often showcases clips of violent altercations.

The woman was met by an ambulance at the next train station, and treated for swelling and cuts to the face, the police said.

Footage of the incident quickly went viral and received tens of millions of views.
