Meghan McCain blasts audience on ‘The View’ after they applaud John Kelly criticism: ‘He lost his son in combat for freedom!’

She really went off this time

"The View's" Meghan McCain snapped at her own audience for cheering the other co-hosts' criticism of outgoing White House chief of staff John Kelly.

What happened?

On Tuesday's show, McCain and her fellow co-hosts discussed news that President Donald Trump had announced Kelly was on his way out, and offered up their criticisms.

Co-host Abby Huntsman remarked that the position of Trump's chief of staff appears to be a "thankless position."

"That's the problem why people don't want that job," Huntsman explained. "One day the person is perfect for [Trump], and then he tweets, 'You're fired,' and you're a spineless, clueless flunky.

"It's a thankless job, and you have to be a yes-man or a yes-woman, when the job isn't supposed to be that," she continued. "You serve to help the president and to be sort of the go-between between the staff and the people coming to his office and the president."

Co-host Sunny Hostin said that she felt Kelly — a retired U.S. Marine Corps general — and his reputation were tarnished as a result of serving in Trump's administration.

"When John Kelly was appointed, I'm thinking, you know, 'He is this four-star Marine general — he will be the adult in the room.' But it's clear that they clashed, that Trump did not listen to him, and honestly, he came in with this wonderful reputation, and I think the administration tarnished that reputation."

What about Kelly's reputation?

Huntsman responded by saying that Kelly still has a stellar reputation despite being linked to Trump.

Hostin went on to detail why she felt that Kelly's reputation wouldn't be the same, pointing to incidents such as reportedly disparaging Rep. Frederica Wilson (D-Fla.) and endorsing the child-separation policy at the U.S. border.

This was the point when McCain interjected and said, "You're talking about children! He gave a child for our freedom. His son died in combat!"

Hostin continued pointing out what she believed to be Kelly's negative actions, and the audience began to applaud.

McCain, clearly put off by the audience's reaction, shot back, "I just think it's weird to be clapping!"

"Whatever you think about his politics, he lost his son in combat for freedom, and again, clapping in that way, again, your call. Everyone can interpret him differently. I think there are some things that precede politics, and losing a son and being part of a Gold Star family is one of those things," she concluded.
