Mexico deploys massive troop force to stop migrants from crossing the US border
June 24, 2019
"What a message to Washington Democrats, who are now being outdone by MEXICO"
Mexico has sent a massive deployment of troops to the U.S.-Mexico border in order to crack down on the crisis of migrants attempting to enter into the United States.
Mexico's Secretary of Defense Luis Sandoval said that nearly 15,000 troops had been sent to the U.S.-Mexico border, and approximately another 2,000 National Guard troops to the Mexico-Guatemala border.
"In the northern part of the country, we have deployed a total of almost 15,000 troops composed of National Guard elements and military units," Sandoval said.
This deployment comes after President Donald Trump threatened to raise tariffs on Mexico, among the greatest trade partners of the United States, unless the country acted to lessen the crisis on the border.
The president relented on the threat after saying he made a deal with Mexico.
"Migration is not a crime," Sandoval said in his statement, "it is an administrative responsibility."
Rep. Mark Meadows (R-N.C.), praised the news without confirming it in a tweet.
"If true, what a message to skeptics who repeated talking points that [President Trump's] agreement with Mexico was an empty piece of paper," Meadows tweeted.
"And perhaps more importantly," he added, "what a message to Washington Democrats, who are now being outdone by MEXICO on securing America's own border."
