NFL quarterback gets baptized in the Jordan River: 'I am truly in awe' of Israel

'It is simply overwhelming'

Houston Texans quarterback Deshaun Watson recently took a trip to Israel, where he was baptized in the Jordan River and visited some of the most notable locations from the New Testament. Watson called the experience "life changing."

"It is simply overwhelming," Watson said in a statement, according to the New York Post. "To be baptized in the waters of the Jordan River, sail on the Sea of Galilee, and visit one of the first towns where Jesus preached his Gospel—I am truly in awe of this wonderful land and the wonderful people who live here."

In an Instagram post about the trip, Watson said he also visited the hometowns of Jesus and Mary Magdalene and saw the first church in Capernaum.

"This is a part of the world which gets a lot of attention internationally, and this is a chance for me to look beyond the headlines and learn more about the history and culture of this land," Watson said. "I have been blessed to visit many countries around the world, but the chance to visit the Holy Land, see the sites and meet the special place, truly is a special blessing and an amazing opportunity."

Watson's journey to Israel was co-sponsored by an organization called America's Voices in Israel, which takes famous people to Israel in an effort to combat the negative perception some people hold toward the nation.

"Every visitor feels the uniqueness of the place...and it has been a privilege to see Deshaun...make this special journey," Bracha Katsof of America's Voices said. "I hope many more people will be inspired to come, experience for themselves and learn more about Israel.
