Nothing is safe: Mattel to meet with same-sex couple who demand gay Barbie wedding sets

When two Arizona men could not find a same-sex Barbie set to gift a young family member in honor of their upcoming wedding, they decided to craft their own — and now the decision may change toy aisles forever.

What happened?

Matt Jacobi and Nick Caprio, who are set to be wed next year, recently discovered that Mattel, the company that produces the famous Barbie doll, only creates wedding-style Barbie and Ken doll sets — or in other words, toys that represent heterosexual unions.

So they set out to rectify their problem. According to the men, who appeared on "Good Morning America" last week, they bought two Barbie wedding sets to acquire two Ken dolls. They then combined the male dolls in a single package to represent a same-sex couple.

The men later campaigned Mattel to begin manufacturing same-sex couples in their wedding sets. The reason? Caprio told KTRK-TV that same-sex marriages are now just a fact of life.

"It's going to come up in your family no matter what," he said. "As more same-sex couples are having kids, your kids are going to have kids in the class that have gay parents and things like that too, so it's not that huge shock anymore."

How did Mattel respond?

A company spokesperson told "Good Morning America" they reached out to the couple, who has been together for more than a decade, to schedule a meeting.

According to Bride.com, the couple will meet with the head of design for Barbie dolls, as well as Mattel's design and marketing teams. The couple said the meeting will either take place this week or during the first week in January.
