The White House was temporarily put on lockdown over a suspicious package

The Secret Service is investigating a suspicious package found on Pennsylvania Avenue near the North Lawn of the White House. It was later determined to be safe.

Here's what we know

In a tweet on Monday at 11:26 a.m. ET, the Secret Service reported that its Uniformed Division Officers were "responding to an incident involving a suspicious package located on Pennsylvania Ave." Pennsylvania Ave Northwest was shut down between 15th and 17th streets. This section of Pennsylvania Ave runs between the North Lawn of the White House and Lafayette Park.

The Secret Service closed all foot traffic on that section of road, including in Lafayette Park.

The Hill reported that the White House was placed on lockdown, and reporters were moved into the briefing room.

President Donald Trump was reportedly in the White House at the time of the incident. He signed sanctions against Iran as the lockdown was in place.

Washington Examiner reporter Steven Nelson tweeted a picture of the briefing room at 11:22 a.m., minutes before the Secret Service tweet. At the time, he said that reporters had not been given any details about what had happened.

By 12:33 p.m. ET, the Secret Service had tweeted that the package had been "declared safe by Secret Service" and D.C. Police.

The White House was also put on lockdown on June 19, when an unidentified man dropped a backpack on Pennsylvania Ave, and then attempted to flee the scene. He was quickly captured by Secret Service officers. During that incident, Pennsylvania Ave was also closed between 15th and 17th streets.
