Sixth-grade girl shoots three at Idaho middle school, is disarmed by female teacher: police

'Today we had the worst nightmare a school district could encounter'

A sixth grade girl pulled a handgun from her backpack and shot two fellow students and one adult at an eastern Idaho middle school on Thursday morning, authorities say.

According to police, the girl was disarmed by a female teacher and taken into custody shortly after the shooting, and all three victims are expected to survive their injuries.

What are the details?

"This morning, at approximately 9:08 a.m., a sixth grade female student retrieved a handgun from her backpack," Jefferson County Sheriff Steve Anderson said during a media conference.

"She fired multiple rounds inside of the school and out," Anderson continued. "She injured three people."

The sheriff confirmed that the victims "were injured with gunfire."

The Associated Press reported that police were called to Rigby Middle School at around 9:15 a.m. after gunshots were heard by students and staff.

The outlet reported:

A female teacher disarmed the girl and held her until law enforcement arrived and took her into custody, authorities said, without giving other details. Authorities say they're investigating the motive for the attack and where the girl got the gun.

The three victims were transported to a local hospital via ambulance with injuries that appeared to be non-life threatening. The injured adult is reportedly a custodian at the school, who has since been released from the hospital.

What did one student say about the shooting?

The Idaho Falls Post Register reported:

Lucy Long, a sixth-grade student at Rigby Middle School, shared her experience from inside the school with the Post Register. She said she heard two gunshots around 9:10 a.m. She said the classroom then went under lockdown: lights and computers were turned off and the students lined up against the wall.

Lucy said she was comforting her friends and began recording, so police would know what happened if the shooter came in. The audio contained mostly whispers, with one sentence audible.

"It's real," one of the students is heard saying.

KTVB-TV reported that following the shooting, students were evacuated to another nearby school to be picked up by their parents or bussed home.

"Today we had the worst nightmare a school district could encounter," Jefferson School District Superintendent Chad Martin said after the incident. "We had a school shooting here at Rigby Middle School. What we know so far is the shooter has been apprehended. There is no further threat to the students."
