President Trump makes dying man's wish come true with a personal phone call

A terminally ill Connecticut man's dying wish came true earlier this week. Jay Barrett of West Haven received a personal phone call from President Donald Trump.

The 44-year-old man, who has cystic fibrosis, was recently sent home from a hospital to begin palliative care at his sister's house.
Barrett's sister, West Haven City Councilwoman Bridgette Hoskie, who describes herself as "100 percent Democrat." crossed the aisle to help make her brother's wish come true, Fox News reported.

Hoskie, along with her friends and supporters, sent emails to the White House and used the online petition system asking for the president's help.

What are the details?

Trump reportedly made the unexpected call Tuesday night. Hoskie handed her brother the phone.

"I'm the secretary for the president of the United States. Do you have time to talk to him?" the person on the other end said to Barrett.

"Alright Jay, you look handsome to me. I just saw a picture of you," Trump said at the beginning of the call with Barrett.

"Oh, you're giving me kind honors. I look like s**t," Barrett responded.

Trump laughed and then continued the conversation.

"How are you doing? How is it going, Jay?" Trump told the man "You're a champ. You're fighting it right?"

"That's what we Irish do – right?" Barrett answered.

"Yeah that's what the Irish do – you better believe it," Trump said.

"Mr. President, through thick and thin, you know there's been a lot of thicks, and there's been a lot of thins, I support you," Barrett told Trump.

Trump told Barrett that he wished he could come to a rally.

"I wish you could come to a rally. I wish you could come," Trump said. "I know you like that stuff and I wish you could. ... It sounds like you have a great sister, Jay."

Trump promised Barrett that he would have a seat at the "front row, center" of a rally when he is in the area.

Barrett said he planned on making to Washington, D.C., before his "expiration date."

Trump told him not to talk about expiration dates and that he believes he will still be around 10 years from now.

"You're my kind of man, Jay. ... I'm very proud of you," Trump said. "I'll talk to you again, Jay, OK? You keep that fight going. We both fight."

Eric Trump and U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development regional chief Lynne Patton made calls to Barrett on Monday, he told the New Haven Register.

Eric Trump "told me they're pulling for me and praying," Barrett told the newspaper.

Even though he's supposed to have only six months to live, Barrett told Trump he plans to vote for him in 2020.
