Trump mocks Rashida Tlaib for refusing to visit her grandmother after complaining about Israel's ban
August 16, 2019
"...a complete setup."
President Donald Trump weighed in on the controversy surrounding Israel's ban on several members of Congress from visiting in a pair of tweets he lobbed out on Friday.
"Israel was very respectful & nice to Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.), allowing her permission to visit her 'grandmother.' As soon as she was granted permission, she grandstanded & loudly proclaimed she would not visit Israel," the president tweeted.
"Could this possibly have been a setup?" he asked. "Israel acted appropriately!"
The president answered his own question in a second tweet sent eleven minutes later.
"Rep. Tlaib wrote a letter to Israeli officials desperately wanting to visit her grandmother," he added. "Permission was quickly granted, whereupon Tlaib obnoxiously turned the approval down, a complete setup."
"The only real winner here is Tlaib's grandmother," he joked. "She doesn't have to see her now!"
Tlaib tweeted about her reasons for not accepting Israel's offer earlier Friday after complaining about the ban against her that they rescinded on "humanitarian" grounds.
"Silencing me & treating me like a criminal is not what [my grandmother] wants for me. It would kill a piece of me," she said.
"I have decided that visiting my grandmother under these oppressive conditions stands against everything I believe in--fighting against racism, oppression & injustice," she concluded.
