Unvaccinated senior NIH doctor told Fauci forced vaccinations are 'extraordinarily problematic,' plans to buck Biden's vaccine mandate

A top infectious disease doctor, director of a research team at the National Institutes of Allergy and Infectious Disease — which Dr. Anthony Fauci heads — has reportedly been outspoken in his opposition to forced vaccinations. Dr. Matthew Memoli, a 16-year veteran at the National Institute of Health, allegedly informed Fauci in the summer that vaccine mandates are "extraordinarily problematic."

Memoli – who recently received a 2021 NIH director's award for his supervision of a national study into undiagnosed COVID-19 cases early in the pandemic – purportedly emailed Fauci on July 30 regarding the COVID-19 vaccines, according to the Wall Street Journal.

"I think the way we are using the vaccines is wrong," Memoli allegedly told Fauci, adding that vaccine mandates are "extraordinarily problematic."

Memoli believes that the COVID-19 vaccines should be reserved for the most vulnerable, such as obese people and the elderly. He reportedly said that widespread inoculations against coronavirus could hamper people's ability to develop natural, robust protection against the virus through infection.

"I do vaccine trials. I, in fact, help create vaccines," Memoli told the Journal. "Part of my career is to share my expert opinions, right or wrong ... I mean, if they all end up saying I'm wrong, that's fine. I want to have the discussion."

Memoli reportedly plans to make his case against vaccine mandates during a roundtable session with NIH's main bioethics department on Dec. 1.

David Wendler – a senior NIH bioethicist in charge of planning the session – told the Journal, "There's a lot of debate within the NIH about whether [a vaccine mandate] is appropriate. It's an important, hot topic."

Memoli, 48, is unvaccinated against the coronavirus, but he is not an anti-vaxxer and said his children received all of their pediatric vaccinations.

Memoli has applied for a religious exemption from President Joe Biden's federal vaccine mandate and told the Journal he is willing to risk his job over the forced COVID-19 vaccination. The deadline for federal workers to be fully vaccinated is Nov. 22, which means they need to receive their last dose of the COVID-19 vaccine no later than Nov. 8.

Memoli — a graduate of the College of William and Mary — is the chief of NIAID's Laboratory of Infectious Diseases Clinical Studies Unit. The LID CSU "seeks to perform translational research studies to answer fundamental questions regarding human influenza and other emerging viral infections to inform and impact future vaccine and therapeutic design, while also making an effort to assist in evaluation of novel products that may impact human health."
