Watch: Bernie Sanders dismayed to find out a big bank sponsored an event featuring him

'Is Bank of America really sponsoring this?'

Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (Vt.) got quite a surprise Tuesday, when he learned that Bank of America was the presenting sponsor for an event featuring him.

What are the details?

Sanders was participating in a sit-down interview with the Washington Post as part of its series covering the 2020 Democratic presidential candidates, according to The Hill.

In a clip of the event shared on social media, the Post publisher and CEO Fred Ryan takes a moment to thank Bank of America for its sponsorship before introducing Sanders and his interviewer, Robert Costa.

Costa takes the stage and thanks Sanders for attending while shaking his hand, as the Vermont democratic socialist asks, "Is Bank of America really sponsoring this?" inciting laughter from the audience.

"Well, let's just get on with the interview," Costa suggests.

Anything else?

Sanders has spent his career criticizing big banks and Wall Street in general and advocates for breaking up financial institutions deemed "too-big-to-fail."

On his 2020 campaign website, Sanders hits out at Bank of America along with the nation's other largest banks — JPMorgan Chase, Wells Fargo, and Citigroup — while arguing "no single financial institution should be so large that its failure would cause catastrophic risk to millions of Americans or to our nation's well-being."
