A Windsor, Ontario, man who identifies as a woman was arrested by police in relation to an alleged sexual assault that took place at a women's shelter in the border city.

Windsor Police Service released a public news update that stated a female victim contacted police on April 4, 2023, to report that she had been sexually assaulted while staying at a women's shelter in Windsor.

The suspect, who was alleged to frequent the downtown area near the shelter, was already staying in the women's shelter at the time of the alleged attack. The accused allegedly climbed into the victim's bed and sexually assaulted her.

Police released information and a photograph of the suspect, who was identified as 32-year-old Cody D'Entremont, who allegedly goes by the name "Desiree Anderson."

According to the National Post, when asked to clarify the suspect's gender, Windsor police stated the suspect was processed as a female and should be referred to as a female.

“We want to thank the public for their support and for sharing our post,” Windsor police reportedly stated. “Your help in spreading the word played a crucial role in bringing about a resolution," they said.

It only took around two and a half hours after circulating the information for police to take the suspect into custody.

Windsor Police Service told TheBlaze that the suspect turned himself in shortly after the information went public.

When asked how the man was allowed to enter the women's shelter and whether there is a protocol for allowing or not allowing "transgender women" inside, the police spokeswoman said, "That would be a question for the shelter."

TheBlaze also asked whether police had inquired of the shelter as to how the person was able to gain entry, but police said that information was not available to the public.

"The accused has not been convicted ... there are certain things in the investigation that must be held back from the public in order to properly conduct the investigation," said Constable Bianca Jackson, public communications officer for Windsor Police Service's Corporate Communication Unit.

Any additional information about the alleged crime can be given to Crime Stoppers, anonymously, at 1-519-258-8477 (TIPS) or online at www.catchcrooks.com
