President Donald Trump took a shot at Fox News, a network that he has had a positive relationship with, over the way it handled a recent town hall event with Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.).
Several videos from the event received widespread attention because they demonstrated a significant number of Sanders supporters in attendance and cheering for proposals like Medicare for All.
President Trump took issue with an allegedly high number of his supporters outside the studio while the Sanders fans were allowed in.
"Many Trump Fans & Signs were outside of the @FoxNews Studio last night in the now thriving (Thank you President Trump) Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, for the interview with Crazy Bernie Sanders," Sanders said. "Big complaints about not being let in-stuffed with Bernie supporters. What's with @FoxNews?"
Sanders' town hall on Fox News earned extremely high ratings, dominating competing programming on other networks and outpacing town hall ratings for other 2020 candidates. From The Daily Beast:
According to early Nielsen data, more than 2.5 million viewers tuned in to hear Sanders, a self-described "democratic socialist," make his case on Fox News during the 6:30 pm hour, prior to primetime. That total viewership bested CNN's Bernie Sanders town hall event from back in February, and it doubled MSNBC's during the same time period on Monday evening, and nearly tripled CNN's.
The prior town hall rating record for the 2020 cycle was a CNN-hosted event with Sen. Kamala Harris (D-CA), which drew 1.95 million total viewers.
Despite the Democratic National Committee refusing to have any Democratic debates on Fox News, Democratic candidates are showing interest in crossing over and speaking to a more conservative audience during the primary. Sanders' success will likely only add to that.
Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-Minn.) will hold a Fox News town hall next month. South Bend, Indiana Mayor Pete Buttigieg is reportedly negotiating to go on Fox News, as is Rep. Eric Swalwell (D-Calif.). Beto O'Rourke has also expressed interest.
