Here’s the deal: when people sit down to watch football, they want to see team spirit, great feats of athleticism, and perhaps even a funny commercial or two during breaks.
What they don’t want to see, however, is a trailer for the latest spine-chilling, demonic horror movie.
This is especially true when football fans have young kids. But family bonding via football has turned into family bonding via all sleeping in the same bed out of fright.
Those who watched the Dallas Cowboys game last Sunday probably know what we’re talking about.
“They are running an advertisement for some 'Exorcist' sequel in the middle of these games,” says Stu Burguiere.
“That looks scary as heck!” exclaims Glenn, who also watched the Cowboys game and the terrifying "Exorcist" trailer at “every commercial break.”
“As a dad … who's gonna be the guy getting up in the middle of the night if my kids are terrified by this?” says Stu.
“We live in a world in which basically the only thing you can safely allow your kids to watch are sports,” he continues, “like everything else is terrible, the Disney channel has become terrible.”
But now even sports aren’t totally benign.
“Occasionally, there'll be a commercial in which the devil's hand comes out of the screen and grasps their throat,” laughs Stu, although he’s serious about the issue.
Glenn recalls the days when television had a designated “family hour” that only aired content safe for everyone, but those days, it seems, are long gone.
“Like the NFL–how much money do they make? ... Billions and billions and billions of dollars,” says Stu. “Just take the money from somebody else … put cigarettes back on television, please!”
“Just don’t scare the crap out of the children … and me, quite honestly,” laughs Glenn.
