A DTE Energy Co. employee in Detroit was fired this week over a scathing Facebook post that railed against customers calling in to complain about a lack of power after weekend storms.
Nearly 300,000 DTE customers in the area were without power after Sunday’s weather.
Rachel Burnett, a woman tasked with handling calls from customers, wrote on her Facebook page:
Got to work this morning and we currently have 275,000 customers without power! White people in Oakland county are ppiiiisseddd right now they got f***** up lol…And don’t call me acting a g****** fool I will hang up on yo a**! ***THIS HAS BEEN YOUR DTE REPRESENTATIVE PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT***ANNOUNCEMENT
WJBK-TV reported that DTE confirmed the woman’s termination, saying they have a zero-tolerance policy for such behavior from its employees.
“We expect our employees to treat our customers and the public with the utmost respect, and unfortunately, in this case, that didn’t happen,” Trevor Lauer with DTE said, according to WJBK.
But Burnett told the local news station that she was just joking. Watch her side of the story in WJBK’s report:
“You almost have to joke to keep your sanity,” Burnett said, noting that customers would yell and scream at her on the phone.
