NBC, CNN Reporters Rush to Take Mike Huckabee’s ‘Libido’ Comments Out of Context, Quickly Forced to Issue Corrections

CNN reporter Dana Bash and NBC News correspondent Kasie Hunt both jumped on former Republican Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee on Thursday for saying women are “helpless without Uncle Sugar” providing them with birth control because they “cannot control their libido.”

Except, he didn’t say that. In fact, both reporters’ representations of Huckabee’s comments were so off, they quickly issued corrections. However, as Mediaite’s Noah Rothman notes, “the first impression will be the one that sticks.”

For context, here’s exactly what Huckabee told members of the Republican National Committee on Thursday:


While he was certainly insulting Democrats, Huckabee actually called women “smart, educated intelligent, capable of doing anything anyone else can.” The comments may offend some, but he certainly wasn’t arguing that the federal government shouldn’t help women who can’t “control their libidos,” as Bash initially suggested.

After sending the first inaccurate tweets, both Bash and Hunt posted clarifications:
