Church Sign About Satan Had One Woman so Shocked That She Did a U-Turn to do a Double-Take

A controversial marquee outside of a Virginia church is turning heads and creating a fair bit of outrage. It reads: “Remember, Satan was the first to demand equal rights.”

The message, which appeared on Sunday outside Taylor Road Baptist Church in Chesapeake, Virginia, has some people so stunned that they are doing a double take as they pass it.

“When I drove by it, I wasn’t sure I read it right. So I did a U-turn,” a local named Terri Young told WTVR-TV, adding that she was angry after she saw the sign.

The sign has also created some confusion, with the outlet noting that many residents are unsure whether the message pertains to gay rights, women or some other related issue.

Pastor Mel Kunkle, though, said that the message isn’t targeted at a specific group.

Kunkle, who declined to be quoted in the story, said that the marquee is referencing Satan’s attempt to be equal with God, though he opted not to go into specifics in his comments to WTVR-TV.

While the pastor said the sign is intended to make people think, Young questioned what message it is sending to youths who might pass by it.

“I mean, what is that teaching children then? It’s not okay to ask for equal rights?” she asked. “If you do, and someone else thinks you shouldn’t have them. That you equal Satan? I don’t get it.”

The sign also includes a reference to Isaiah 14:12-17, which reads, in part, “How you have fallen from heaven, morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations!”
