HERO: Armed resource officer stops gunman at Maryland high school

Blaine Gaskill is the armed resource officer who shot and killed a gunman who opened fire Tuesday morning at Great Mills High School in Maryland.

Gaskill responded immediately to the threat and neutralized the student who succumbed to his wound hours later. Sheriff Tim Cameron of St. Mary's County reported that the 17-year-old targeted two other students including a female student he had had a prior relationship with. According to CNN, the young woman is in critical condition.

CNN reported that the shooting took place in a hallway before class began. That's when the armed resource officer used his handgun firing one fatal round at the gunman. One 14-year-old male student is in stable condition.

Gun advocates were quick to point out the need for armed security on school campuses nationwide after the incident and called the armed officer a hero.
