Watch: Here’s what you should know about FISA and government surveillance

What’s going on?

The House of Representatives voted Thursday to continue an NSA surveillance program that lets the government read American citizens’ private messages if they’re communicating with foreign nationals. The bill would extend the NSA program for another six years.

Is anyone trying to stop this?

There’s a bipartisan push among lawmakers to stop the extension of Section 702 of the FISA Amendments Act, the provision allowing the government to conduct warrantless surveillance on Americans’ private communications.

But the law passed in the House 256 to 164 and is now being considered by the Senate. Republican Sens. Rand Paul and Mike Lee and Democratic Sen. Ron Wyden are expected to vote against the measure.

Glenn’s take:

NSA’s warrantless surveillance of American citizens is unconstitutional, and our rights should not be violated in the name of keeping us safe. Why can’t we agree on something as basic as your right not to be surveilled if the government doesn’t have a warrant from a judge?
