Shepard Smith rips into Trump in another scathing critique - here's why

Fox News anchor Shepard Smith scolded President Donald Trump for his rhetorical attacks on our allies in NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Here's what he said

"Today at a photo op for world leaders," Smith explained at the top of his show, "President Trump upended world order in a way no American president has in modern history.

"He attacked our closest allies, he berated them and insulted them," he continued. "He labeled Germany 'captive to Russia.' And he blasted NATO agreements that date to post-World War II."

"President Trump's utterances not only opened the door for a new system overseas," he added, "they could also turn back the global clock centuries."

Smith went on to give a history lesson to explain "what NATO is, and what it means to the world, and to America."

"A reminder of why NATO exists at all," Smith said, "on one hand, it's certainly about defense, but it's also a recognition that in order to thrive, there must be a collective effort. All of us in the NATO alliance together."

"The truth is every NATO country has paid its bills for NATO's shared budget," Smith said in response to Trump's criticisms. "No country, not one, is delinquent. About four years ago, NATO members agreed to beef up their militaries, to spend 2 percent of their countries' gross domestic product for defense by the year 2024."

"Obviously that deadline is still six years away, and only a handful of those countries have reached that goal thus far," he added. "But in each of the last four  years, the vast majority of European nations in the alliance have increased their defense spending as percentage of GDP."

"They have pledged to spend more," Smith concluded, "they are not freeloaders."

Smith criticized Trump for demanding that each nation spend even more than the United States is paying for defense. Smith also slammed Trump for criticizing Germany and pointed out that the ally has provided troops for our operations and our militaries provide mutual support to each other.
