NYC Mayor De Blasio blew off NYPD ceremony to protest the G20 summit

Officer Miosotis Familia was shot on Wednesday simply because she is a cop. Her memory was honored at the New York Police Department’s somber swearing in of 524 recruits yesterday, but Mayor Bill De Blasio did not attend. He instead spent the day inside the mayoral residence, according to the New York Post and visited the children of the slain policewoman later in the day.

When asked why the mayor did not attend such a major event for his city, his spokesman Eric Phillips stated, “Scheduling conflicts.”

On his schedule instead is a trip to Germany where he was invited and paid by the organization Hamburg Shows Attitude to be the keynote speaker at Saturday’s Hamburg Zeigt Haltung rally, protesting the G20 Summit.

De Blasio has a history of conflict with the NYPD. Police attending the funeral of Officer Rafael Ramos, killed amidst an uptick in anti-police protests, turned their backs on the mayor in response to remarks he made that are believed to have contributed to an adversarial climate between New Yorkers and police.

Mike Opelka said that the mayor’s decision “seems to be kind of insensitive” on “Pure Opelka” today, and that “the leadership should be in mourning.”
