Spielberg's office on Tuesday confirmed reports that the Academy Award-winning director won't be leading the project.
Deadline Hollywood reported Spielberg "couldn’t square his vision of this movie with the budget." The film is still moving forward with Warner Brothers now looking for Spielberg's replacement, according to Variety.
"Silver Linings Playbook" and "The Hangover" actor Bradley Cooper is set to play Kyle, whose autobiography forms the basis of the film. Kyle and a friend were murdered at a Texas gun range in February; a 25-year-old Iraq war veteran was indicted in the killings last month.
