Marco Rubio has won re-election to the U.S. Senate over Democratic opponent, Florida Rep. Patrick Murphy.
Rubio's victory comes 19 months after the Florida Republican announced his bid for president in April 2015. But after losing to Donald Trump in the primary in his home state of Florida by nearly 20 points, Rubio suspended his campaign for president in March, having won just one state (Minnesota), Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
Four months later, in July, Rubio announced he had changed his mind, telling Fox News the Pulse nightclub terror attack in Orlando caused him to rethink the decision.
“It really gives you pause to think a little bit about, you know, your service to your country and where you can be most useful to your country," Rubio told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt at the time.
