A student from Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School has teamed up with liberal activist Al Shaprton to hold a gun control rally outside President Donald Trump's building in Manhattan later this summer, according to the Associated Press.

What are the details?

  • Aalayah Eastmond, a 16-year-old junior at MSD, plans to hold the rally on June 2.
  • The rally will mark the beginning of New York state’s Gun Violence Awareness Month.
  • The rally will begin at Trump International Tower in Columbus Circle and move to Trump's famed "Trump Tower" on 5th Avenue.
  • Eastmond planned the meeting with Sharpton last week during his weekly meetings in Harlem.

It's personal for Eastmond

Eastmond told the AP that the location of the rally is significant because she lost a family member to gun violence in New York City 15 years ago, and now she gets to return to the city to make a difference after she nearly experienced the same fate.

"I actually lost my uncle to gun violence in Brooklyn. So for it to happen to me, in my face, that just shows that change has to happen now," she said.
