9-year-old girl viciously pummeled with rapid-fire punches to her head aboard school bus; main assailant appears to larger male; cops make arrest

Cellphone video caught the moment a 9-year-old Florida girl was viciously pummeled with rapid-fire punches to her head aboard a school bus this week, and Miami-Dade County Public Schools said police with the district have made an arrest.

The disturbing clip shows the girl getting beaten by what appears to be a pair of males; the assailant who delivers the vast majority of punches appears to be significantly larger than the victim.

The mother of girl who was attacked told WFOR-TV, "Emotionally, I couldn't even last two minutes. I couldn't look at the video. Like any mother, I am destroyed. I fell to my knees and at that moment I said I have to do something."

The mother, who wished to remain anonymous, told WPLG-TV her daughter is a third-grade student at Coconut Palm K-8 Academy in Homestead.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue officials confirmed to WPLG that they responded to the incident around 4:10 p.m. Wednesday and assessed two children for injuries who were then released to their parents.

The mother added to WPLG that she will be pressing charges: “My goal is not to incriminate any other children. My goal is to make sure they have the security for the kids to make sure this doesn’t continue to happen.”

Miami-Dade County Public Schools told WFOR that district police "arrested the offender, and they will be charged accordingly. Additionally, those involved will be disciplined according to the code of student conduct."

The mother added to WFOR that the arrested student is 14 years old.

Her 10-year-old son also was attacked

The mother's 10-year-old son also was attacked on the same bus ride, WFOR reported.

"Another kid came out of nowhere and hit my son, and he fell to his knees, and they started to hit him," the mother told WFOR.

She added to WFOR that her children have been enrolled at the school only for three weeks.

The victim’s mother told WPLG she's spoken to school administrators about bullying but that the principal, assistant principal, and even a counselor have done nothing about it. She added to the station that the principal told her that staff members are overwhelmed and recommended that she withdraw her children from the school.

“We’ve had issues before with my son and the kids on the bus and also in the cafeteria and at dismissal,” the mother added to WPLG. “I already drew the line, and I was also on phone with the district -- I spoke with someone from the district — and the only thing they could advise me of was to continue to speak with the principal and pull up a bully report.”

She's not the only parent concerned about what's happening at Coconut Palm K-8 Academy, as another mother who also wished to remain anonymous told WFOR that "my son was bullied at that school since the beginning of the school year."

This mother added to WFOR that her son — a third-grade student — was repeatedly physically bullied by his peers, but that despite her reaching out several times to the school and messaging teachers and administrators, she was ignored or not answered for weeks.

Things got so bad that she pulled her son from the school, WFOR reported.
