Just 8% of illegal immigrants to the European Union are women; adult men make up the vast majority of migrants

Just 8% of illegal migrants who made it to countries in the European Union in 2022 were women, predominantly coming from Middle Eastern and northeast African nations.

The numbers were reported by Frontex, the EU's border and coastal agency, which expects the borders to be increasingly challenged moving forward.

"It is assessed as highly likely that disruptions to global security, food and energy supplies, together with macroeconomic factors in key countries of origin of irregular migration and cross-border crime will put the European Border and Coast Guard (EBCG) to the test," the report read.

Of 331,553 illegal immigrants to the European nations, just 26,446 were women; the rest were labeled as "not available."

From January 1 to December 31, 2022, almost 145,000 people migrated from what was described as the "Western Balkan" region, comprising Syrian, Afghan, and Turkish travelers. This region made up the largest share of illegal arrivals.

The second largest group came from the "Central Mediterranean," which included those from Egypt, Tunisia, and Bangladesh. That pathway accounted for over 105,000 illegal immigrants.

Syrians by far were the single largest nationality, with over 98,000 recorded migrants. The second-highest was Afghanistan at 36,031.

Of the 331,553 migrants, 70,726 made their way through Europe all the way to the English Channel to attempt to cross into the United Kingdom. More than half of those illegal immigrants (42,646) were of unknown countries of origin.

Also according to the report, just 18% of migrants who were "detected for illegal border-crossing on entry at external sea borders" were children.

These figures reveal that the vast majority of illegal arrivals into Europe in 2022 were adult males.

"There is much to suggest that clandestine entry may increase in the next year in line with expected higher migratory pressure at the EU external borders in general," the agency warned.

The security apparatus also worried about fraudulent documentation as a method of gaining entry into the continent. With a 5% increase in fraud since the previous year, the agency said that once COVID-19 restrictions were lifted, illegal entries increased along with fraudulent documentation.

EU member states reported nearly 20,000 users of fraudulent documents at their borders, carrying approximately 27,000 files in total.
