Jewish student's dorm room door set on fire at Drexel University

The dorm room of a Jewish student at Drexel University was reportedly intentionally set on fire last week. It is currently unclear who is responsible.

While the authorities have not arrested a suspect in the case, they announced that the "Philadelphia Fire Department ... determined that decorations on a residence hall door had been intentionally set on fire."

The police received a report of the fire that took place at Race Hall at 11:45 p.m. on October 10.

University President John Fry released a statement the day after the incident on campus, claiming that the school is actively investigating the situation to determine if there was any bias or discrimination involved.

"As a campus community, we need to maintain an environment of mutual respect that supports the free expression of ideas through civil discussion and peaceful protest while facilitating deep and authentic exploration of complex issues," Fry stated. "There are appropriate venues on and off campus for expressing opinions and engaging in peaceful protest."

"At the same time, there is a line between expressing strong opinions through robust discussion, debate, and peaceful protest — and targeting any individual for discrimination, intimidation, or hate. Unfortunately, we were made aware of a distressing situation that included destruction inside one of our residence halls. Thankfully, no one was injured. We are investigating to determine if bias, discrimination, or hate, which we do not tolerate at Drexel, was the motivation behind this incident. The investigation into this incident is ongoing, and we will update the community once it has concluded."

The New York Post reported that no one was hurt in the fire and the local fire department was able to put the fire out quickly after arriving.

There is no evidence to suggest that this was a targeted attack, but it raises questions about the motive amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas overseas, where the Jewish state was the target of a surprise attack carried out on October 7. More than 1,300 Jews were killed in the attack, including children and infants.

At the time of this report, 29 Americans are known to have been killed in the conflict. Israel has retaliated against the attack by Hamas, which has resulted in the deaths of 2,200 people in Gaza, per the New York Post.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear that he does not intend to reach a peace agreement, saying that Israel will "obliterate Hamas."
