Trump reportedly cancels annual White House Christmas party for media

President Donald Trump has canceled the annual White House Christmas party for the media, according to Fox News.

The invitation-only gathering has been a decades-old tradition for White House reporters, anchors, and media executives.

The news of the party's cancellation has not been announced by the White House. Fox News' Howard Kurtz reported the news.

What happens at the party?

Guests are permitted to bring a guest to the grand event that boasts a catered buffet and a chance to peruse the elaborately decorated White House.

But one of the greatest perks was when the president and first lady would spend hours posing and chatting with each of the guests in front of the White House Christmas tree. Then, the White House would send the photos to the guests.

At one point, the affair was so popular that two events were held — one for broadcast news outlets and the other for print organizations.

Was there a party last year?

Last year, the first family held the soiree and made a brief appearance at the event where the president gave opening remarks that lasted about two minutes, according to Politico.

CNN boycotted the party in 2017, citing "continued attacks" on journalists, the New York Post reported.

What else?

The cancellation didn't come as a surprise to some considering Trump's repeated remarks about the "fake news."

The White House also recently pulled press credentials from CNN's Jim Acosta after a news conference where he refused to hand over the microphone. A federal judge ordered the White House to restore his press pass.

Some media members have received invitations to one of the multitude of holiday parties being hosted by the White House throughout the month, including some Fox News hosts.

Trump has also bypassed the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner the past two years.
