UN Security Council refuses to condemn Hamas attacks on Israel

A number of members of the U.N. Security Council condemned the attacks on Israel by Hamas over the weekend, but the denouncement was reportedly not unanimous.

During an emergency session, the U.S. pushed for the Security Council to condemn the horrific attacks by Hamas, which took over the Gaza Strip and launched a surprise attack on Saturday that ended the lives of 700 people and wounded at least 2,000 more, per the Times of Israel.

U.S. Ambassador Robert Wood said that "there are a good number of countries that condemned the Hamas attacks. They're obviously not all."

"You could probably figure out one of them without me saying anything," he said, appearing to allude to Russia. This comes as no surprise, as Russia's relationship with the West has slowly been deteriorating since the war in Ukraine was ignited in early 2022.

The report noted that there was no joint statement considered by the Security Council and no talk of a binding resolution.

Politico reported that Russia's U.N. ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, said it was untrue that Russia has not condemned the attacks carried out by Hamas. He went on to say that Russia "condemn[s] all the attacks on civilians," seeming to point to both sides inflicting harm on civilians.

Nebenzia went on to say, "It's important to stop the fighting immediately, to go to a cease-fire and to meaningful negotiations, which were stalled for decades."

However, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has made it clear that the conflict between Israel and Hamas is a war. Israel's defense minister apparently ordered a "complete siege" of Gaza on Monday, with no plans to reach a ceasefire.

Chinese Ambassador Zhang Jun echoed Russia's position on the conflict, condemning all attacks on civilians. However, Hamas was not specifically mentioned during that condemnation.

“What’s really important is to prevent the further escalation of the situation and further casualties of civilians,” Zhang said. “What’s also important is really to come back to the two-state solution.”

Wood made it clear that the U.S. was specifically focused on condemning the attacks by Hamas on citizens, characterizing the attacks over the weekend as an "unprovoked invasion."

When Wood was asked about the possibility of reigniting talks about a two-state solution, he said that there would "be time for that," but that right now "we've got to deal with the hostage taking, the violence that is going on that's being perpetrated by Hamas."
