WATCH: Nancy Pelosi dodges when asked about AOC concentration camp remarks: Republicans ‘will misrepresent anything’
June 19, 2019
"They take responsibility for the statements they make."
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) says that she hasn't heard what Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) said about Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities and Nazi concentration camps, but that didn't stop her from trying to shift the blame to Republicans over the matter.
At a Wednesday breakfast discussion hosted by the Christian Science Monitor, the speaker answered a question about recent comments that the freshman congresswoman made comparing ICE detention facilities to concentration camps, and saying the two were "exactly" alike.
Pelosi told reporters that she wasn't aware of what Ocasio-Cortez had said.
"These members of Congress, they come to represent their districts and their point of view, and they take responsibility for the statements they make," Pelosi said, adding that she wasn't "up to date on [Ocasio-Cortez's] most recent one."
"I do have some comments to make to my caucus writ large about the political nature of how politically charged the atmosphere is so, understand that while the Republicans have no interest in holding the president accountable for his words, they will misrepresent anything that you say, just if you have one word in the sentence that they can exploit."
Ocasio-Cortez made the comparison in a social media video rant Monday night, in which she said that the U.S. "is running concentration camps on our southern border, and that is exactly what they are. They are concentration camps."
While finding support from liberal reporters and academics, she faced widespread backlash from congressional Republicans for the statements.
Following the firestorm, Ocasio-Cortez doubled down on her comments Wednesday, saying that "not one dime should go to DHS for building these camps as they detain children & families" and that "We should not fund the caging of kids & families. Pretty simple."
Pelosi's remarks can be found in the C-Span video below around the 56-minute mark.
