Preppers? L.A. Tells Residents to Prep for ‘Two Weeks on Your Own’ Just 1 Day Before Quake Hits

Those preparing for disasters of many kinds have often been lumped in with the more extreme “survivalists” and “doomsday preppers,” groups that have been called “crazy.” But now emergency responders seem to be urging residents in disaster-prone areas to ready themselves for a length of time beyond just the three-day bug-out bag.

Emergency Responders in California Tell Residents to Prepare for Two Weeks in Case of Disaster

This Feb. 8, 2013 photo shows Guardian Survival Gear’s Elite Survival Kit features food, water, shelter and hygiene items for one person for 24 hours in Boise. There’s a growing subculture of people who want to be prepared for the collapse of American democracy and civilization. (photo: AP/Katherine Jones)

In fact, a day before a 4.7 magnitude earthquake hit Southern California Monday, the Los Angeles police and fire departments were, in commemorating the two year anniversary of the devastating earthquake and tsunami that hit Japan March 11, 2011, telling residents to be ready for “two weeks on your own.”

CBS LA reported Battalion Chief Larry Collins saying, “the message for a lot of us needs to be, ‘Be ready for anything.’”

“The message used to be 72 hours, but we’ve seen in disasters like [Hurricane] Katrina, even [Hurricane] Sandy recently, that, really, if it’s wiped out your infrastructure, and your electricity grid and your communications, it will be very likely be more than three days before you start getting food, water and other supplies coming in from outside,” Collins said according to CBS LA.

With that, perhaps prepping for longer term survival, which some might have considered crazy before, could be becoming more socially acceptable. In a previous interview with TheBlaze, Phil Burns, the president of the American Preppers Network, explained why the preppers movement was being “demonized” at the time of the 2010 shooting in Newtown, Conn., and clarified what prepping is really all about:

What many might not realize is that there are subsets of preppers — subsets Burns said might have some similarities to the prepper movement as a whole but that have different intentions: there are survivalists, doomsday preppers and conspiratorial preppers.

But the majority who consider themselves preppers — if they would even think to give themselves the formal designation — subscribe to a philosophy that is nothing like those of the more extreme variety that have been featured lately on reality TV shows and by those getting ready for the Mayan apocalypse.

“To us in particular, preparedness is about living a self-reliant lifestyle . . . It’s about, in a disaster situation, having a philosophy that is not we sit around and wait for FEMA to show up. Preppers come together, help each other out and make sure everyone is provided for.”

APN’s Chief Operations Officer Mike Porenta spoke with TheBlaze during National Preparedness Month last October, giving more information about how preparing for a variety of situations means more than just stockpiling food:

Porenta’s number one suggestion is to get to know your neighbors before you’re in an emergency situation. There is a benefit in banding together as a group in an emergency, but he said doing so after a disaster strikes is not the best time.

[...]

“People think about food the most, but they haven’t taken into consideration shelter … or access to water,” he said.

In a situation where “normal American life can’t continue, figure out your most essential human needs” and gather those items (or learn how to safely obtain them if you can’t gather them per se):

  1. Oxygen
  2. Water and water test kits
  3. Shelter
  4. Food

The message given to California residents might have hit home Monday morning when at 9:55 a.m. (PST) a 4.7 magnitude earthquake occurred in Southern California. The Richter scale goes from a level of less than two up to more than 10. To put the magnitude of this earthquake into perspective, the one that caused the tsunami that killed thousands in Japan was 9.0 magnitude.

The epicenter of California’s latest quake was about a dozen miles from the Riverside County desert community of Anza, about 100 miles southeast of Los Angeles, and it was felt strongly at the BNP Paribas Open tennis tournament happening in nearby Indian Wells.

“It kind of shook and then I thought, ‘God, is that an earthquake?’” Susie Bride, a cashier at Cahuilla Mountain Market and Cafe in Anza, told the Associated Press. “It kind of shook and then it rolled a little bit and then it shook again.”

Rachelle Siefken was at home in the Riverside County town of Aguanga with her 4-year-old daughter and 16-month-old son when the shaking started. It was the first earthquake for both children and her son in particular was scared, she said.

“I grabbed him up in my arms and I stood in the doorway with him,” Siefken, who teaches English online for the California Virtual Academy, said to AP.

Watch this CBS LA report regarding the earthquake with some footage of how it looked:

As battalion chief Collin’s pointed out, natural disasters can take shape in earthquakes and hurricanes, but also snowstorms, tornadoes and more. APN would say people should be prepared for situations catalyzed not only by natural events but also terrorist attacks or economic collapse.

And with officials in California saying residents might need to be prepared to live on their own for days before help could be available to them and prepping experts too have emphasized the importance of not expecting to rely on FEMA, would it not be reasonable for everyone to consider preparing for the possibility of “two weeks on your own”?

There are so many fools in our society that think if and when a really big disaster hits, the FEMA trucks will just roll into every affected town with food, medicine and supplies. These mindless believers in big government will be in for the shock of their lives. How soon we forget Katrina. And a really big earthquake in an area with many times the population?

The govt will save us!” Repeat this until you believe it! Do not take care of yourself. Do not be ready. Do not be self sufficient. Your role as a progressive drone is to be dependent on govt. In the event of an emergency, you are to sit and cry until a govt responder comes to save you. We may or may not give you a whistle. If you are attacked, you are to crap yourself to scare the attacker, nothing more.

If you are motivated to start “prepping” NOW after reading this article – it’s probably too late. You will need at least a 12 month supply of food, medicine, water and protection (read ammo, guns, etc.) if you plan to survive. If you don’t have that by now….you are SCREWED. Thank God I have that and live WAY out in the sticks – over 8 hours from the nearest “city”. And NO you are NOT WELCOME!!! Trespassers will be shot and eaten (don’t worry – I’m too good of a shot to have survivors).

As I have posted several times on this site, when I was living in Southern California in the 1990′s, around 20 years ago, FEMA came to my workplace to conduct a seminar on earthquake preparedness, and advised all of us to put together an emergency survival kit and to keep it somewhere where HOPEFULLY we could get to it if we weren’t killed outright in the quake or weren’t hopelessly trapped under a lot of rubble, because we were advised that in case a major earthquake hit, we might be on our own for several days before order could be established, and FEMA advised us what we should have in that emergency survival kit.

So I did this and have maintained that emergency survival kit ever since – and have since expanded on it, with not only a natural catastrophe in mind but also a man-made (read: OBAMA-made) one as well.

So in point of fact, to paraphrase a Barbara Mandrell song, I was a prepper when prepper wasn’t cool.

By the way, all, regarding what kind of food we should keep, FEMA advised stuff that’s high-protein, that doesn’t take up much space, that’s ready to eat, and that will keep for quite some time. That’s why MY emergency survival kit is heavy on foods like beef jerky and sardines: in case of a natural emergency or a SHTF situation, don’t count on having electric power. And since this is obviously not the most balanced type of diet, consider having a supply of multi-vitamin supplements on hand as well.

You know what makes me laugh??

A few days ago I read a government report that was asking people to “turn in” potential terrorists to the authorities if they fit items on this list…

Some of the items I remember off the top of my head:

    1. Missing fingers (careful shop workers, your clumsiness has made it so you are now terror suspects…)
    2. Pays for things with Cash.. (people like myself that don’t like credit cards, since its easier to keep an eye on your spending when you physically have the cash in front of you)
    3. Has more than a 1 or 2 week supply of food… (I know alot of people like this)..

So what California is telling people to do, is go out and make yourself a terror suspect?? Nice going…

I agree that it is a good idea to be “prepared”… But if the government says people that stockpile are potential terrorists, and then tells people to go and stockpile, isn’t our government then advocating the creation of potential terrorism suspects??

You are missing the big picture….. Now the government and President can now arrest you because you fit the description. This will allow them to take you guns or keep you from obtaining any (because you would then be a felon and can’t have a gun). This is just another way to disarm everyone. Remember the left will hit from all angles.

Gosh, where has common sense gone?!? I live in the West Coast; all the lessons I learned about preparing came to me after the Northridge and Loma Prieta earthquakes – FEMA water trucks being stampeded; help to certain neighborhoods taking weeks, not days, to get there…in spite of those lessons, GOVERNMENT continued to tell the citizenry to prepare for 3 days – until yesterday.

Get to know your neighbors – YES!
But DON’T let them know you’re stocking up in case of The Big One, unless you are absolutely 100% positive that they are like-minded individuals! Because you’re neighbors might just be the kind waiting for FEMA to tell them what to do next…and disasters are known to turn smiling neighbors into zombies.

Look, if you want to learn what to do and what NOT to do; what to expect and what NOT to expect, then just research the last two major hurricanes to hit the Gulf Coast, using words like ‘unrest’, ‘looting’, ‘FEMA’, ‘law enforcement’, etc as key words. And remember – it may not be a natural disaster you need to prepare for; man-made disasters and civil unrest or terrorist activities can do the same, so ALL you good people need to Be Prepared

My favorite is when the “NORAML” people say: “When it happens we are coming to your house”. Really? I tell them two things..”if you do it will not go well for you…and it’s likely we are long gone”. Thankfully we do have some family and friends that do “get it”. Most are either LE or ex Mil or Med folks and they all contribute.

Then there are the ones who hedge their bets with a case or two of water and two boxes of MRE’s…I have no idea what they are getting ready for. Most assume “whatever” will last three days and NORMAL returns.

Because the parasites are a peculiar bunch. Their voting habits are the sheets that make the beds they sleep in. When their bed starts to stink, do they change the sheets? NO! That is why america has fallen. Being prepared is common sense, or at least it used to be. Every recent disaster has proven the government can’t take care you. It took two weeks for some in Sandy to even get basic contact with authorities, and longer to receive any aid.

Most folks don’t even have a weeks worth of food in their home, much less a flashlight. Frankly, if people do not prepare for the unexpected, they will be reliant and a drain on other peoples resources. What I hate are the ones that feel that they deserve to be taken care of. Well, when the crap hits the fan, they’ll be taken care of. They can eat their Obammy phones.

I seemed to have overlooked oxygen in my modest preparations. Anyone suggest a good way to store it? Maybe balloons? Air-tight 55 gallon drums? And how do you get it in there? A regular scooper work? And how the heck do I get the nitrogen and other gases out of air so I can store just oxygen?

Seriously, though, I don’t see firearms anywhere in the article. Why is it that so may “prep” lists fail to cover everything you’ll really need? I’ve yet to see any official “prep” instruction to contain guns and ammo. In a situation requiring 2 full weeks of stored food, security will be a very real issue (especially in California).

If folks are really interested in preparing for some unknown event (earthquake, volcano, EMP, economic collapse, blizzard, dirty bomb, etc.), they really need to do some Googling on the topic. There are folks out that who have put together some real lists to start working from.

Security and security planning is just as important as food, water and other supplies. Without those things, you won’t have the other stuff very long.

If they could just take away our guns, there could be a big picnic on our lawns with all the food storage.

    surprised?
the government is stockpiling weapons, ammunition, food, water, medical supplies…

maybe John Q Citizen might consider his or her own plight given their obvious concern.

Just think of all of the people who get wild amounts of food stamp money.
Imagine how much they could be prepping and even on our dime?

With a modest supply of dehydrated food, water, generator fuel, and of course firearms with ammo, my wife and I can shelter in place at our own home for a couple of months. The only tough part would be if we were both at work when the SHTF, and trying to get home. Luckily for us, the most common problem we should have is weather related, so we should have plenty of warning.

I’m in the same boat. With my current level of readiness I have enough food, water, supplies, ammo to last me around 9 months or so. I’m still stocking up though, I want to get over a year. I figure at that point when I run out, everyone else around me died off long ago. I can bug out without event, lol.
