Happy Presidents Day!
Presidents Day is always celebrated on the third Monday in February, but we’re going to take a look at the most pro-American things that happened on the anniversary of 2018 Presidents Day, February 19.
1846: The Republic of Texas becomes the State of Texas following its annexation by the United States. The sovereign Texas existed for roughly a decade, declaring its independence from Mexico after the Texas Revolution of 1836.
1878: Inventor Thomas Edison patents his phonograph, the first device to be able to both record and reproduce sound. Over the course of his life, Edison acquired some 1,093 patents.
1945: 30,000 United States Marines arrive on the Japanese island of Iwo Jima. The Battle of Iwo Jima resulted in tens of thousands of casualties on both sides, but delivered a key American victory in the Pacific.
1976: President Gerald Ford formally rescinds former President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s executive order that relocated Japanese Americans into internment camps during World War II.
2002: NASA’s Mars Odyssey space vehicle begins its mission of mapping the Red Planet. Already the longest-operating Mars orbiter, Odyssey is projected to be in service until around 2025.
