Too little, too late: White House, Hill Republicans pan Pelosi's impeachment probe vote

Conservative Review

The following is an excerpt from Blaze Media’s Capitol Hill Brief email newsletter:

Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced late Monday afternoon that, following weeks of criticisms about the legitimacy, or lack thereof, of her impeachment process, the House will vote this week on a resolution that “affirms” the ongoing impeachment probe against President Donald Trump. Since she previously refused to hold a vote on the matter, the announcement marks a change of course for the speaker, who wrote to colleagues that the resolution will “eliminate any doubt” about whether or not the White House could “continue obstructing the House of Representatives” due to questions about the probe’s legitimacy.

But while a full House vote would speak to one part of the White House’s and Republicans’ criticisms of the investigation, which also included due process and fairness concerns about the president’s legal rights and House Republicans’ investigative powers. “Speaker Pelosi is finally admitting what the rest of America already knew,” stated White House press secretary Stephanie Grisham, “that Democrats were conducting an unauthorized impeachment proceeding, refusing to give the President due process, and their secret, shady, closed door depositions are completely and irreversibly illegitimate.”

“Codifying a sham process halfway through doesn’t make it any less of a sham process,” said House Oversight Committee ranking member Jim Jordan.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham saidholding a vote at this point “is a bit like un-ringing a bell as House Democrats have selectively leaked information in order to damage President Trump for weeks."

“Today’s backtracking is an admission that this process has been botched from the start,” said House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy. “We will not legitimize the Schiff/Pelosi sham impeachment.”
