Rep. Tom McClintock's (R-CA), amendment proposed to eliminate the $200 million a year Essential Air Service (EAS). The EAS provides subsidies to small rural air carriers to keep ticket prices low. Taxpayers should not have to be subsidizing airline ticket prices. Other methods of transportation such as automobile, bus, or train are valid options as well. In some cases EAS airports are within only a few hour drive of a major hub. The amendment failed 164-238 on June 26, 2012.
