The pressure President Donald Trump is putting on Democrats to secure the border is starting to show cracks in the Democratic caucus. Clearly, it's time to turn the heat up.
At least one freshman Democrat elected in a previously GOP-held district has signaled support for some border security funding, including physical barriers in areas on the southern border.
Rep. Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, used comments from his Democratic colleague Rep. Katie Hill, D-Calif., to make this very point on Friday.
Hill is a freshman who defeated Rep. Stephen Knight, R-Calif., in California's 25th Congressional district, which had previously been held by Republicans since 1992.
Other freshman Democrats from vulnerable districts have expressed concern over the shutdown strategy of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer and their opposition to border security measures they've previously supported.
“If I am getting comments and contact from my constituents expressing concern that the Democrats are not prioritizing security, then I think we can do better,” freshman Rep. Abigail Spanberger, D-Va., told Politico.
Rep. Colin Allred, D-Texas, said “I’m not going to rule anything out, I really am not,” when asked if he would support wall funding in a compromise deal with Republicans.
President Trump and the Republicans need to turn the heat up on these Democrats. Call them out by name and shame them for supporting Pelosi's foolish and irrational position on the wall. Speak directly to their constituents and rally the grassroots to contact their legislators and give them an earful of why Congress needs to end the shutdown and secure the border.
There's no need for President Trump to declare a national emergency to build the wall if Democrats buckle first.
