Sen. Rand Paul explains why sanctions on Iran could have an unintended outcome

On Thursday's episode of "Kibbe on Liberty," Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) explained that the United States' economic sanctions on Iran could backfire.

In this clip, Paul expressed that he was once critical of the Iran nuclear deal because of the decision by the Obama administration that required upfront payment in exchange for compliance. Paul reasoned that if you parsed out the money slower over a long time, it's your one carrot that you can withdraw if there is not compliance.

However, Trump withdrew from the agreement last year and placed sanctions on Iran's nuclear program. Because the U.S. withdrew from the deal and ratcheted up sanctions, Iran may see President Trump's sanctions as economic warfare, according to Paul.

Paul argued that while economic sanctions are intended to drive Iran to the negotiation table, it could also push Iran toward military action.
