Have You Seen the Anti-Allen West Ad That Uses Kids? West Accuses It of 'Exploiting Children
August 27, 2012
"Why would we want to bring our children into this conversation? I'm an adult, I'm a grown man."
Patrick Murphy, Congressman Allen West's opponent, has an imaginative way of framing his attack ads against his opponent. First, it was the ad featuring West punching women with boxing gloves - an ad so controversial it sparked a several days long impromptu discussion of racism in the media.
So civility might not be Murphy's strong suit. However, he hasn't let that stop him from putting out an ad slamming Congressman West for his lack of civility, with a none-too-subtle slap at the Congressman for being childish. And we mean that literally. The ad, entitled "Time Out," is narrated by children:
For the keen observers in the audience: No, West never referred to anyone as "the most vile, despicable member of the Communist party." That comment is a mash-up of several different accusations West made against his opponents, some directed specifically at Debbie Wasserman-Schultz, and others at the Democratic party generally. However, given that the ad splices that particular quote across different children, it's probably safe to say that the makers acknowledge it's a composite statement, and not one of West's genuine attacks.
If you think this thinly veiled accusation of cooties is upsetting Congressman West, though, you'd be dead wrong. West has already hit back, hard, against the ad, appearing on Fox News' "Fox and Friends" and blasting the ad as an instance of his opponent "exploiting children."
"This, again, is the level of gutter type of politics you see emanating from people. They can't address the issues to the American populace and talk about viable solutions to make sure that we can turn this country around and heading in the right direction," West said. "Why would we want to bring our children into this conversation? I'm an adult, I'm a grown man."
