The New York Times editorial board then ("Mr. Dole's Transparent Tactics," Mar. 1995):
Senator Bob Dole's calculations are pretty easy to figure out. To secure the Republican Presidential nomination, he has to overcome his longstanding reputation as a moderate. So he is running hard to the right, offering some slice of himself to every conservative faction. He is against abortion. He is against affirmative action. Now he wants to revoke the ban on assault weapons passed as part of last year's crime bill. ...There was a day when it was fair to expect more reasoned discourse from Mr. Dole.
The New York Times editorial board now ("The Wisdom of Bob Dole," May 2014):
Bob Dole no longer recognizes the Republican Party that he helped lead for years. Speaking over the weekend on “Fox News Sunday,” he said his party should hang a “closed for repairs” sign on its doors until it comes up with a few positive ideas, because neither he nor Ronald Reagan would now feel comfortable in its membership. ...Mr. Dole’s words should remind his party that it is not only abandoning its past, but damaging the country’s future.
