The Reason College Officials Say They Can't Fire a Confessed Child Pornographer Might Infuriate You

"...he should have been fired a long time ago."

A Washington state man who has confessed to federal charges of possessing large quantities of child pornography still continues to receive his $48,000 annual salary — and the school says they can't fire him because of union rules.

Auburn Green River Community College computer technician Benjamin Gran confessed to charges filed last February pertaining to possession of massive amounts of child porn, but was only placed on paid administrative leave, according to KOMO-TV.

Vickie Sheeham, spokeswoman for the school, told KOMO-TV that the school is unable to fire Gran due to the “condition of him being in the union and him being here on campus as an employee" but that they take the case "very seriously and that's why he's been on administrative leave."

However, the union Gran belongs to, disagrees with the school's assessment regarding his contract.

"I don't know how they can say our contract or we are forcing them," Washington Federation of State Employees Executive Director Greg Devereux told KOMO-TV. "That, in my opinion, is nonsense."

Regardless, some students are upset the school is continuing to pay him after he already pled guilty.

"It's kind of alarming, to be honest," student Jake O'Donnell said.

"I guess he should have been fired a long time ago," another student, Samantha Kraft, added.
