The Gross Thing a Florida Woman Found in Her Bag of Frozen Spinach

A Florida woman was preparing a batch of appetizers on New Years Eve, thawing a bag of frozen spinach in the microwave. Finding a large chunk still apparently unthawed when draining the spinach, she tossed it into the sink and moved on.

New Years Eve party over, Madeline Brogan from Sarasota returned to the chunk in the sink, but it wasn't a blob of now-thawed spinach: it was a bird skull.

The discovery was made too late because Brogan's party guests had already enjoyed her appetizers the night before, WTVT-TV reported.

To make matters worse, the skull only had one eye.

"I picked it up and started pulling the spinach off it and realized there were two eyeholes, and it was a little skull," she told the news station. "I ate that eye, or someone did."

To WWSB, Brogan said she never would have expected to find a bird part in a bag of spinach.

"I would expect a bug, or a natural part of something that grows on the ground, even a pebble or a stick, but not a bird," she said.

Brogan also wrote of her discovery on her Facebook page:

I found a bird skull in a bag of frozen chopped spinach from Publix. Yes, a skull... With one eye, which means the other one was eaten (insert Birdseye brand joke here). I called the store and spoke to the manager. He offered me a refund... Just what I wanted; $1.79 and bird flu. — feeling disgusted.

According to WTVT, Brogan purchased the store-brand spinach from a Publix grocery and noted she isn't mad at the store. She does want the store to make sure other parts of the bird aren't in other bags of spinach.

"We did receive communication from the customer through our customer care department, which was shared with our corporate quality assurance team," Publix told WTVT. "They are working through the details with the customer and the supplier. We have not received any additional complaints and believe this is an isolated incident."

Brogan said she didn't want the refund offered to her, and, for now, she's laying off frozen spinach.

"I will probably need therapy because that little thing is going to haunt me," she told WWSB.
