But we're speaking Japanese!': Clever viral clip looks at cultural stereotyping from unique perspective

A YouTube clip entitled "But we're speaking Japanese!" is catching fire.

Posted Thursday, it eclipsed the 50,000-views mark early Friday afternoon — and as we close in on 5 p.m. it's nearing 85,000 views and doesn't appear to be slowing down.

The video features five people sitting in a booth in a Japanese restaurant. When their waitress shows up, she pauses — then turns to the only "Japanese-looking" woman in the group and asks her (in Japanese) what the food order will be.

But the woman replies to the waitress in a perfect American accent, "Oh sorry, I don't speak Japanese."

Fortunately all of the remaining "non-Japanese-looking" guests in the booth do speak absolutely spot-on Japanese — which does little to comfort the obviously confused waitress, who continues speaking Japanese to the "Japanese-looking" woman who doesn't speak Japanese.

Getting nowhere fast, the other four patrons make their case in a very funny way.

Note: The clip flashes what may be a humorously subliminal "Subscribe" frame toward the end — and indeed there's an ad for a book written by one of the creators of the video.

But it's still a hoot to watch:
